Just like the arrival of a new baby,  you will need to prepare for your new puppy.  He or she will need a place to sleep, bowls for food and water, toys, grooming supplies, and dental tools.  Below are a few of my favorite  puppy supplies.  Some are “must haves”  some are articles you may add as time goes by. All of the supplies on this page can be found at my favorite place to shop for ALL pet need... The first thing you will need is a place for your puppy to call his/her own. A crate is a must.  There are many types of crates to choose from. Any one that suits your needs is fine. (read the crate article HERE) He or she will need both a water bowl and a food bowl.  I prefer metal bowls.  They are easy to keep clean and are much more sanitary than plastic or ceramic. You will need both a collar and a leash.  I always start my puppy with a buckle collar, at about six months I switch them over to a very light choke chain. A Flexi Lead is great for walks in the park, or for travelling. Getting your puppy used to being groomed is a MUST.  The sheltie coat is easy to maintain if you start young, and groom on a regular basis. Here are some of the “must have” grooming supplies” You will also need a pair of nail clippers and some Styptic Powder, in case from time to time the nail is cut too short.  I have all of these tools, and recommend them all, but you will only need one set. The Dremel tool is also very good,  there is less chance of cuting into the quick and making the dog bleed.  They get used to it very quickly and really don’t mind it,  if you start them at a young age. Dental Care is very important,  and can save you hundreds of dollars if you keep your puppy’s teeth clean.  I have a tooth scaler and do their teeth each time I groom them.  There are a number of good dental products available now, including doggie tooth brushes, tooth paste, and oral Spray. And of course your puppy will need his toys, treats and food.  I feed and recommend  FROMM Adult and FROMM Puppy food.  My shelties have been on this food for some time, and do very well on it. These are great toys, they will keep your puppy busy for a long time.  Fill with cookie treats or maybe some peanut butter.  A VERY safe toy for a youngster.
